Ombudsman Impeachment

Ombudsman Impeachment : House Boots Gutierrez Out

Ombudsman Impeachment - House Resolution No. 1089 finally ended the ombudsman impeachment trial against Merceditas Gutierrez, for the Lower House at least.

After a 7-hour marathon session, the House voted 212 for impeachment, 46 against impeachment while 4 abstained. Only 95 votes were needed to impeach.

The resolution is on its way to the House of Senate and will form as basis of the Articles of Impeachment. It basically, includes proof of Ombudsman Gutierrez’ low conviction rate and inaction on the NBN-ZTE scam the “Euro generals” scandal, the fertilizer fund scandal, the Philip Pestano case, and the Mega-Pacific deal.

Representative Edcel Lagman’s, a member of the minority, move to hold the impeachment in abeyance pending investigation to the blackmail sent via text message saying that Congressmen who will vote against Gutierrez’  impeachment will have their Priority Development Assistance Fund withheld.

Lagman also questioned the railroading of the proceedings even when the Supreme Court is yet to make a final decision on Gutierrez’ petition to quash the House’ proceedings against her.

Malacañang was happy about the news. It’s not really surprising considering that they’ve been trying to hound Gloria’s men ever since Noynoy was inaugurated.

On other news, absentee congressman, Manny Pacquiao voiced out his stand against the impeachment of Ombudsman Gutierrez via Twitter which gained him a lot of critics.

Pacquiao Tweeted: “I vote NO! and I can give my explanation thanks.” No explanation followed though.

His account got flooded with comments about his presence in the plenary. One commenter even said that “to h*ll with @congmp. Why the f**k did you run for congress when you know you’d barely be present?”

Manny then tweeted, for the last time, perhaps : “Sorry everyone but hanggang dito nalang delete ko na account ko thank you very much to all your support.”

His account remains active at this moment.

Merisi kay paeffect.

Safe Sex is OK!

Pro RH Bill

I took a Sociology class on family planning almost a year ago from SJC, a local sectarian school, and learned that most of this country’s problem; food security, unemployment, traffic jams, crime, and what not; can be attributed to over population. The fact that I learned this from a Catholic school means that the Catholic church somehow agrees that population is really a problem that greatly impacts national progress in a negative way.

The Church’s claim that the passage of the RH Bill into law will lead to rise in promiscuity and abortion rate is nonsense.

We are living in a world where Jesus has to be a guy with chisled abs, hazel eyes, bearded and generally hot. Where Mary is not the typical woman who grew love handles after child birth and with skin that could qualify her to model for Belo with Lucy Torres and ZsaZsa Padilla. This is an era where everything is sexed up, you can’t blame a kids with raging hormones to act on it. RH Law or no RH law, these figures will surely rise. The only thing we could do is make sure they know how to make sure that they don’t add to our population problem at such young age.

And talking about abortion, well, what’s to abort when people know know what planned parenthood is all about?

The church is not totally against contraception though. They are just against condoms, IUD, pills and the new methods which they consider artificial but come to think of it, in a fast paced world, don’t you think unrolling a condom is more natural than putting X’s on calendars?

My representative is against the RH Bill. According to a news clip:

Hon. Roger G. Mercado also reiterated his standpoint against the controversial Reproductive Health Bill saying that “this is not the way to attain a progressive nation.”
The congressman said that our countrymen should focus on agriculture and eco-tourism development and batted for a decentralization of population at the metropolitan areas and scatter the people back to their provinces by generating livelihood opportunities at the countryside. ~PIA So. Leyte

My family have been blessed to be recipients of the Congressman’s programs on agriculture and eco-tourism and yes, it’s one of the things that allowed me to quit my job in the city and stay at home. But I’m just lucky that my dad owns parcels of agricultural land.

He might be right but I’m yet to read a bill authored by him or any of his colleagues like Manny Pacquiao that persuaded thousands of people in Manila or Cebu to go back to the provinces. Until then, this netizen is making sure he persuades other people to support the passage of the RH Bill into law.

Wisconsin Protests

wisconsin protestsThe the latest series of Wisconsin Protests found Russ Feingold as one of its allies. Fiengold who is no longer in elected office was still able to strengthen the crowd’s spirits. He called on people in politics as well as other public figures who claim to be pro-workers to join them in their struggle.

It is predicted that Friday’s turnout will be the highest yet, given the attention building and momentum it picked up. When Fiengold arrived at the rally around 11:00 am, a large herd of supporters flocked to capitol. Many of them have already been spending night along at the capitol building rotunda. Even the balconies looking down into the rotunda were virtually impassable as crowds march around picking up momentum for the afternoon Wisconsin protests.

Immediately after fetching local firefighters from the local fire station, Feingold took them to the capitol where he was welcomed by protesters with chants expecting him to run for Governor.

“I just feel enormous pride in the people of Wisconsin who are coming together — whether union or anti-union — for the rights of workers,”

Feingold mentioned in an interview with The Huffington Post. “This state is one of the originators of many of the workers’ rights and protections on child labor, unemployment compensation, and almost all kinds of workers’ rights. The fact that our governor is trying to destroy those rights is something worth fighting against. And I, of course, as a citizen of Wisconsin, somebody who knows the state very well, was proud to just show up and keep my support.”

Sen. Herb Kohl, the states only Democratic U.S. senator has released a quick declaration about the demonstration but he’s not taken a visible part in the Wisconsin protests. President Barack Obama, on the other hand, has criticized Walker’s proposal to strip away the collective bargaining rights of public personnel but he’s yet to make an appearance.

Dawn Schueller, a spokesperson for Kohl, reported that the senator has received more than four hundred and fifty phone calls along with 1,900 emails regarding the protests and Walker’s proposal. Kohl is traveling to Wisconsin from Washington, D.C. on Friday, despite the fact that she didn’t yet have details on his schedule for next week.

Want some fearless forecast? Judging from the number of people affected this series of Wisconsin protests is gonna be a success and the current governor is not gonna be reelected.

Australian PM Names Predecessor as Foreign Affairs Minister

Kevin_RuddAlmost three months after she successfully staged a challenge to party leadership, and in effect the Prime Ministerial post of Australia, against her predecessor, Julia Gillard tapped her opponent as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Kevin Rudd, the 26th Prime Minister of Australia, was at the top post from December 3, 2007 until Gillard took over June 24 this year. Gillard then became the first female Prime Minister of Australia and had just survived in forming a minority government after this year’s elections.

“Kevin’s status as a former party leader and his undoubted capacity meant he is deserving of a senior portfolio where the government can best use his skills. His experience and intense interest in foreign affairs makes this the obvious choice,” Gillard said.

The move is seen as a step to heal any remaining internal divisions in the party.

Meanwhile, Stephen Smith, whom Rudd will be replacing, said that the appointment was “entirely appropriate.” He further said that ”It reflects his standing as a former prime minister of our country.”

Nigerian President Jonathan to Seek Fresh Mandate

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has decided to seek a new term, announcing through Facebook that he will run in the January 2011 presidential election in his country.

“In presenting myself for service, I make no pretense that I have a magic wand that will solve all of Nigeria’s problems or that I am the most intelligent Nigerian,” Jonathan said in a message posted on his Facebook page. Jonathan said he will make a formal announcement on Saturday. His decision to join the election came after the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ruled that the president is qualified to run under the country’s strict “zoning” rules, which mandate that power must rotate to different regions or ethnic groups every eight years.

Jonathan was elected vice-president in the 2007 elections as running mate of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Jonathan assumed the presidency on May 6 this year following Yar’Adua’s death due to a lingering illness.

Violence Welcomes Israel-Palestinian Talks

Signs of renewed violence at the Israel-Gaza border greeted the continuation of renewed talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Wednesday, with at least one person reportedly killed.

Israeli aircraft bombed a smuggling tunnel near Gaza’s border with Egypt on Wednesday, killing a Palestinian and wounding four others, according to Hamas, which controls the area where the attack presumably took place. The airstrike came after at least eight mortar shells and a rocket were fired from Gaza into Israel.

Despite the escalation of violence, talks being held in Jerusalem continued with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton declaring that Israeli and Palestinian leaders were “getting down to business.” “I believe they are serious about reaching an agreement that results in two states living side by side in peace and security,” Clinton said.

However, it is not clear whether one of the most contentious issues in the talks–Israel’s West Bank settlements–has already been discussed. Earlier, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned that he would back out of the talks if Israel re-starts the construction at the end of the month, when a 10-month suspension will have expired. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he is willing to compromise, but he has yet to categorically say whether the settlements will continue or not.
